Hi,

Presently iam ready to do the Upgradation Process. So i want to ask you that, my database size is 200gb.

and it is unsupported version of Oracle to Upgrade to 10g(8.1.6.2 to 10g). Its O/S is on HP-UX so could you

tell me that the Best Process for Upgrade to follow either by Manual Upgrade Process or by Using the

Export & Import to new Oracle Database. If i Follow Manual Method then i had to applying the 8i to 8i Pathes then to 10g . If i Follow exp/imp then i need more down time, which process should i follow ? could any body did this type of upgrades plse let me no, me as it is as it is very Urgent..

Yes, previous reply is correct,
you should use manully/dbua upgrade process instead of exp/imp.

and 8.1.6 is not supported directly to 10gr2.
you need to apply latest/last patchset for 8i and it is 8.1.7 then upgrade directly to 10gr2.

Regards
Taj

Hi Taj,

and 8.1.6 is not supported directly to 10gr2.
you need to apply latest/last patchset for 8i and it is 8.1.7 then upgrade directly to 10gr2.

So, Mr.Taj i want to ask u that after applying the patchset of 8.1.7 on 8.1.6 database we upgrade the database to 8.1.7 manually, we are saying that direct upgrade is possible from 8.1.7.4 to 10g. i want to ask u that there is no need of applying 10g patchset at os level on 8.1.7.4 to upgrade 10g. it is possible to Upgrade 10g database without applying 10g patchset at os level?

Yes no need to apply any patchset on 10g.
you have to just install oracle 10g base release like if it is 10gr1 then 10.1.0.2.0 or if it is 10gr2 then 10.2.0.1.0.

after upgrade process if you want to apply latest patchset for 10gr1/10gr2 then you can apply.

My Question:

Mr.Taj iam not applying the patch set on 10g, iam asking u that
after applying the patchset of 8.1.7.4 on 8.1.6.2 database at os level we upgrade the database manually to 8.1.7.4 ok, then to upgrade the database from 8.1.7.4 to 10gr2 then there is no need to apply of 10gr2 patchset at os Level on 8.1.7.4 database ? with out 10gr2 patchset it is upgraded from 8.1.7.4 to 10gr2 ?

By installing the Oracle 10gr2 Software it is going to upgrade from 8.1.7.4 to 10gr2 with applying the 10r2 patchset at os level on 8.1.7.4 database?

If say it is Upgraded without 10gr2 Patchset, How could it is going to read the all 1ogr2 Components by installing the 10g Oracle S/W it is enough ?

Patchset apply only on database level not OS level.

from 8.1.6 to 10gr1 upgrade is not support directly.
for that you need to first apply 8.1.7 patchset for Oracle 8i. it is latest & last patchset for oracle 8i.
and it is only apply for database level.

now here you have to choice.
1. direct upgrade through export/import
2. upgrade through DBUA/manually

if small database then just install oracle 10g and export oracle 8i database and import in oracle 10g database

if database size is big then use DBUA /MAUALLY upgrade option.

still you have any confiusion please tell us.

Hi Taj,

Thanks alot, here i want to ask u that if i take Full database export then there is no need to apply of any patchsets of 8.1.7.4 on 8.1.6.2 database and upgrade to 10gr2.

my plan is,i want to take full database export and install oracle10r2 s/w
and import the fulldatabase by creating the necessary tablespaces & users etc & on.if i use export on the current existing database & import on new Oracle 10gr2 there will be any problem ? that without applying any 8i to 8i patches it is not going to support in this case?

it is compulsory to apply patchset of 8.1.7.4 on 8.1.6.2 database if i use by export /import?

Here my database level and as well as 0/S level versions are upgrading thats why i want take an advice to use of export & import option rather than manual Upgrade.
Thanks in Advance...

Hi Taj,

It is Urgent plse could u help me as iam taking the late & easy decession
to work it. i wanted to do export & import so i want to do export of Oracle 8i database & import in Oracle10g database there would be no issues with Oracle Block sizes as oracle 8i is 2k blocksize and 10g is 8k blocksize as default. Or i had to mention oracle block size in init parameter with db_2k_cache_size=5gb for 200gb database and also i had to create tablespaces with 2kb blocksize in DMTS.

i want to know that it will work direct import without any blocksize problems from 8i to 10g without specifying any cache size ?
