can anyone tell wts the diffent between stand by & data guard.
and when they r required ?\

both are the same. Standby Database is used for Data Gaurd purpose i.e. in th case of Disaster recovery.

I think data guard is the terminology used in 10g and higher, before to 10g they called stand by database. Where as for replicating oracle database there are otherways like shareplex, oracle streams etc..
