Hi,
I am doing a range partitioaning having more than 1 column as partitioning key, where 1 of the column is a DATE column and the other is a primary key column.
1. Which column takes precedence in terms of partiotionaing.
2. if a row belongs to 2 partition based on the 2 partition keys, then where will be the row posted.
Ex. I have a row whose effective date is 30-Dec-2007, Transation_id is 1000. To which partition this row will go?
3. Will this range partition gives performance improvemnet?
Oracle 9i,10g.

You need only range partiotion with date column. In your situation Partition on primary key doesn't make any sense.Then also you can consider Composite Range-Hash Partitioning.
PARTITION BY RANGE (Effective_Date)
SUBPARTITION BY HASH(Transaction_id)

Thanks Murtuja.
Most of my queries depend on primary Key column value. Hence, I would like to make use of it also.
A composite Range-Hash Partitioning will not work out in this case.
