In simple words, backup taken using exp ustility is logical backup and backup taken using RMAN utility is physical backup.

In technical words, using exp utility you can backup the database objects in a binary dump file. This file can be read using imp utility and can be used to import the objects in the same database or database anywhere else. This backups can not be used to to a point in time recovery.

RMAN provides the facilty to backup the physical files(datafiles) of database hence called as the physical backup. This backup can be used to do point in time recovery with the help of archived logs. Using RMAN, we can backup whole database, particular datafile, particular tablespace, range of archived logs.

Hi,

Export and RMAN backup are two different backup options provided by oracle,as mentioned export backup is logical backup the one purpose of having a logical backup is to maintain object definition of the schemas, moving data from one schema to another scehma, and also can be used to move data between hetergenious oracle environments. hope you are clear with export backup .

Coming to RMAN it is a backup recovery environment provided by oracle to handle the backups for multiple databases using centralized repository .

I suggest you to go through "Recovery Manager Users Guide" to get more insight into the RMAN environment
