I have two v7.3.4 databses on same server (HPUX V11); first is production data, second archive. Schemas are same. Have public database links between them. If I run a query against a local table, it is very fast; against a foreign table (via link and synonym) very slow.
Archiving process involves writing to Archive DB via After Delete triggers on Production DB tables. This is very slow as well. A purge without the triggers may take 30 mins, but with the triggers on( writing to Archive tables), takes 24 hours.
Is this Unix issue, Oracle tuning issue? How do I attack it?

Well, there can be both issues. Did you check the network speed? Full duplex etc.
You can also tune sqlnet part of Oracle. Like SDU.
