Friends:
To_Date can convert a character to a date. This I know. Yet I read in the Self-Test software that To_Date may not be used to convert a number to a date...yet I read in the Oracle reference book I have before that it can be done by this:
select to_date (181172,'DD/MM/YY');
So, I am correct in thinking that To_Date may be used to convert character *and* numbers to a date?
Many thanks.

You can convert date to character using TO_CHAR function and
convert date to character using TO_DATE function.
Syntax : TO_DATE(char[, 'format_model' ])
Example : TO_DATE('May 24,2001','fxMonth DD,YYYY')
