One more issue...Archive log destination is filled up completely,database hangs, no backup was taken since last 2 months. i don't want to delete the archives...Is there any solution to bring back the database to normal without deleting the archives.

Change the archive destination to different filesystem where you have space. and mean while compress and backup the old archve logs.

I think changing the destination may require restart....is there any other way to get back the DB from the hang state to normal.

HI,
use this command.
run{
allocate channel for maintenance device type disk;
delete archivelog until time 'sysdate-1';
}
