 would like to run an OLTP database in archivelog mode what are the disadvantages of this option.

When you enable this mode redo logs will be archived instead of overwritten. I would recommend enabling this option if you are running a OLTP database.

Enabling Archive log will have some performance impact but you can avoid by doing:

1. Save archive log on a different filesystem than your redo log files.
2. Increasing the size of all redo logs. They should not be too small.
