I used function based index(FBI) and performance improved 10fold(before query was taking 10sec,after fbi query is taking 576msecs) for search functionality.
In search we have two options:
1.Begins with( searchstring% ) wild card(%) after search string.
2.Contains( %searchstring% ) wild card(%) before and after search string.
The query using first option got improved but not the query running behind the second option(i.e. Contains Option).
My question is, because wild card is present before and after the search string, the FBI is not being used, how to optimize such queries?

Hi Rahul,
Have you compared execution plan for both of these conditions?
Just a note: Function based indexes are only used when you use CBO. You will see the difference in the execution plans.
In general search with wild card on both end will be executed differently than wild card at the end.
Thanks,
Vigyan
