The ORATAB file contains information about all Oracle installations and databases installed on the node. This information is used to discover Oracle product installations. When an Oracle product is installed, this file is updated with information about the new Oracle home. If this file is not found, then a new ORATAB file is created.

Oracle Universal Installer creates the oraInventory directory the first time it is run on your system. The oraInventory directory keeps an inventory of the products that Oracle Universal Installer installs on your system as well as other installation information. If you have previously installed Oracle products, then you might already have an oraInventory directory.
