system change number (SCN)
A stamp that defines a committed version of a database at a point in time. Oracle assigns every committed transaction a unique SCN.

The state of a database is determined by SCN.State changes after dml like insert, update, delete.System doesnt change in case of select statement.
Control file has the SCN entry.
SCN is vital while recovering database.
