Hi Paul,
The minimal parameters required to configure a standby database are listed below ,and for basic monitoring of performance you could make use of ASH,AWR,ADDM reports in 10g and statspack in 9i .
fal_client
fal_server
log_archive_dest_1
log_archive_dest_2
remote_archive_enable
local_listener
log_archive_dest_state_1
log_archive_dest_state_2

Addition of above listed parameter set below parameter also
1. db_unique_name
2. service_name
3. remote_login_password
4. standby_file_managment
5. db_file_convert_name / log_file_convert_name
6. log_archive_dest_state_n
and for performance you can figure out
1. sql trace with tkprof utility
2. explain plan
3. autotrace
4. 10046 and 10053 trace event with tkprof utility
hope this helps

Attn Taj
I had asked about the minimum configuration ... I know that there are n number of other parameters in standby/dataguard configurations.
-Vinod ,I really appreciate the way you answered my question .
